The Working Class Movement Library records over 200 years of organising and campaigning by working men and women for social and political progress.
The library is built on the personal collection of Ruth and Edmund Frow and now holds tens of thousands of books, pamphlets and archives, as well as posters, banners, prints, newspapers, photographs and more.
The new permanent displays give a taste of the many aspects of working people’s personal and political lives which are represented in our collections. They show campaigners speaking up for change, from Peterloo and the suffragettes to ramblers seeking the ‘right to roam’. There are stories of First World War conscientious objectors, and local volunteers who fought in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and there are accounts and pictures of the Battle of Bexley Square when, in the last Great Depression, 10,000 unemployed Salfordians demonstrated against the hated Means Test.
Admission to the library is free and all are welcome. Individual and group tours are also welcome by appointment.
By Train: There are plenty of trains from the Manchester Piccadilly, Oxford Road, Deansgate line, and the Victoria, Salford Central line which stop at Salford Crescent. Turn left at the top of the steps at the station, then right, down onto the road. walk under the bridge, turn left up the steps and walk straight on. The WCML is the first building you come to.
By Bus: From the direction of Manchester centre, the WCML is fifty yards beyond the Salford University bus stop. All buses passing along Salford Crescent stop there. This includes coaches to and from Blackburn, Bolton, and Blackpool. Jubilee House is distinctive with its black and white gable ends.
The M602 runs from the M6 right into Salford. Turn left at the end of the motorway and follow the road up to a T-junction with the A6. Turn right here then immediately left (signposted University and Salford Crescent Railway station). Turn sharp left at the bottom of the road, passing back under the A6. Take the first turning right and then first left. This puts you by a car park at the back of the library.
