The Heritage Trail includes plenty of attractions that really bring the past to life – making the area’s rich heritage easy and exciting to discover.
Birkenhead was the first town in Europe to have a street tramway (opened in 1860) and visitors can still ride on Birkenhead Tramway to see the town's historic attractions.
The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum is a great introduction to the wealth of local and maritime history and at the Wirral Museum, located in the handsome Hamilton Square, you can discover the story behind the famous Cammel Laird shipyard.
The trail also includes the Shore Road Pumping Station, where the restored 'Giant Grasshopper' steam pump can be seen in action. These huge pumps were used to keep water out of the Mersey Rail Tunnel - the first underwater rail tunnel in Europe.
Other attractions include the Wirral Transport Museum, Birkenhead Priory and St Mary’s Tower.
